Non-Linguistic

What does non-linguistic really mean and how does it help all students retain information?

Over many different researches it has been found that everyone’s brain learns in 2 ways…linguistic and non-linguistic. Have you ever seen a child who is really good at activities such as Art and Music but have a hard time with academics? That’s because they are using the non-linguistic part to learn.
"During this research it was proven to "not only stimulate but also increase brain activity" (Marzano, Pickering, & Pollock, 2001)

This Youtube video is by one of the author's of “What Works in Classroom Instruction”:

How can educators apply technology with this strategy?

The more children or adults use both ways to learn, the easier they will be able to recall the information.Marzano’s suggest that there are 5 different ways to bring technology and his strategies together. Below I have given a description of them along with visual aids. Furthermore, I have provided several links and youtube video’s to help expand your knowledge and understanding.

"Integrating Technology with Marzano's Instructional Strategies"

There are total of 5 recommendations for the classroom that will be helpful with non-linguistic.

This list comes from the book “What Works in Classroom Instruction” by Robert J. Marzano, et. al.
  • Graphic organizer
  • Physical models
  • Mental pictures
  • Illustrations of pictures and pictographs
  • Kinesthetic Activities

There a 6 different graphs that are recommended to used for this, they are:

Physical Modes are another form of teaching with non-linguistic.

The modes can be small external image baby_model-1.jpgor larger external image mastodon_mts.jpg of anything that the child or adults wants to make. They are physical objects that one can hold in there hand and visually see.

external image cityroom-bike-c-blog480.jpgUsing Illustrations of pictures and pictographs-illustrations is a way to show a visual of what you re trying to teach them. The teacher is also able to show the children how to graph charts and to read them. There are programs such as, KidPix, Inspiration, Kidspiration, and Excel that the children can use to draw pictures or pictographs that will help them symbolize what they are trying to learn.Pictograph is “symbols or symbolic pictures to represent information.” (Marzano, 2000). Children can also use illustrations of pictures to express feelings, that they can not put words too.

Pictograph Worksheets

The last recommendation by Marzano’s is Kinesthetic Activities .Which is doing a physical movement instead of just listening to a lecture. “When students use physical movement to role play processes or events, it generates a mental picture of the knowledge in the mind of the learner.” (Marzano's Instructional Strategies//, n.d.).
